Crime Stoppers is a nonprofit organization that offers a secure and anonymous process for individuals to provide information about criminal activities to law enforcement. The program first originated in Albuquerque, NM in 1976, and in 1979, Sumter Crime Stoppers introduced the first program in South Carolina. Since then, several programs have been established, and presently 12 different Crime Stoppers programs serve 20 of the 46 counties in our state.
In 2006, Crime Stoppers programs across South Carolina joined together to create the South Carolina Crime Stoppers Council. The Council strives to provide training to Crime Stoppers programs on the latest crime trends, technology, and methods for collaborating with communities.
The Council aims to unite Crime Stoppers programs throughout the state by facilitating information sharing and promoting innovative ways to build and strengthen partnerships between communities, media, and law enforcement. The Council also provides assistance to communities wishing to start a Crime Stoppers program in their area.
